Last time I was in Oslo, the Opera house was the new poster boy of the harbor. Since then it has been construction time again, to borrow the name of the acclaimed third album by Depeche Mode.

Here we go again for another year at Way Out West. I think it’s the 8th time I visit the festival and it’s getting a bit predictive, but there were a few new additions to explore.

There are several bars related to Depeche Mode around the globe. The Depeche Mode Baar in Tallinn is probably one of the better known, together with the bars in Saint Petersburg and Moscow. But the one in the capital of Latvia is not to be missed!

Das Boot to Tallinn
As our ship was leaving the port in Stockholm, we were getting ready for a weekend with Das Boot. This is an annual sort of festival, where the ship goes from to Stockholm to various places. This year the journey was going across the Baltic Sea to Tallinn.

This year has seen a lot of concerts around the world, perhaps in some way related to the decrease in record sales which forces the artists to hit the roads. Regardless of the reason I estimate that I saw about 80 gigs during the year, and here are some of the highlights.
Sun and mud at Arvika festival
Arvikafestivalen is usually an uneasy mix of scorching sun and rain storms from hell. It doesn’t help with the heat that we’re all dressed in black and paler than Marilyn Manson, but just like last year there were moments of thunder rain inferno.
The year in cities
There are few things that inspire me more than large cities, sprawling with buildings in all directions. This year I’ve seen a fair share of them. Tokyo, Marrakesh, Ulaanbaatar, Novosibirsk, Seoul, Amsterdam, Beijing, Inverness, Irkutsk, Kyoto, Moscow and many more.
Reflections from another Depeche Mode concert
Even though I rarely listen to Depeche Mode these days, they’ve meant a great deal to me for over 20 years. My first experience of Depeche Mode was the vinyl records of “Speak & Spell” and “Construction Time Again” in the early eighties.
