Even though I released a book earlier this year called Here Be No Dragons, I must confess that I do enjoy a good dragon or two. So I found myself going up the steep dirt road in Sani Pass in a dirty jeep to look for them.
During my travels I’ve seen a lot of statues depicting dragons. Saint Georg and the dragon is a popular motif all over Europe. I especially liked the dragons of Ljubljana, where I crossed the Dragon bridge and saw the city emblem feature a dragon. But Krakow is probably the only place I know where you can actually visit a dragon den.
I’m currently in the capital of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Even the name is difficult to spell! While cities such as Bratislava have been depicted as nightmares in movies as Hostel and Eurotrip, Ljubljana is probably so far off the mental map that it is never even getting mentioned at all in western popular culture.
For half a decade, there has been a strange boat situated in the Gothenburg harbour. It is the Chinese restaurant called Floating Sea Palace, cleverly disguised as a dragon ship. It has no engine and the dragon has seen better days, but it has been there for an eternity in my mind.
