It’s been a bleak autumn for Gothenburg’s alternative scene. First came the all-too-early demise of my favorite club Plasticity. Then, one after another, Spacelab, Killing Music and Synthbar also disappeared. A handful of venues gone in just a few months, taking years of memories, friendships and ringing ears with them.
Club scenes have always been fragile ecosystems. They survive on stubborn enthusiasts, sleepless organizers and a crowd willing to leave the comfort of the sofa on a rainy Friday night. Lose enough of those ingredients, and the lights go out.
The dance floor at Romo Night, another classic club.
But every now and then, something new crawls out of the ruins. Tonight marks the premiere of Synthklubben, a new club brought to life by many of the same people who made those earlier nights worth remembering. The name may not win any awards for originality, but that’s hardly the point. What matters is that the music keeps playing and the dance floor fills up once again.
As an added bonus, the evening features the live debut of the outstanding local act Asombria. That’s more than enough reason to put on something black and head out into the night. See you on the dance floor.
