A decade of responsive design

Time flies and suddenly ten years have passed since Ethan Marcotte coined the term “responsive design” in his now classic article.

I first wrote about it in 2011, and in a cringe-worthy way I actually felt the need to include a short example of it since it was such a new term. At the @media conference in London a few months earlier, media queries were mentioned but not frequently.

But it didn’t take long before responsive design became another important tool in every developer’s toolbox. This all sounds so alien today, but remember that back then the mobile browsing just had about 8% of the market and smartphones were just picking up speed.
