Tankar längs Manhattans asfalt

Återvände till Femte Avenyn. För varje steg kände jag stadens puls, mer än i någon annan stad jag varit i. I varje gathörn stod Pretzelförsäljare och spred en söt doft.
Gatan har en högst dual natur: I dess norra ände ligger Harlem, med allt vad det innebär av fattigdom och misär. Dess mitt ligger i Midtown, med statusbyggnader såsom Empire State Building och Flatiron, för att inte tala om de glamorösa köpkomplexen lite längre norrut. Dess södra ände avslutas med triumfbågen på Washington Square, där de flotta hotellen trängs med de schackspelande människorna i parken.
Med en enkel taxiresa längs en enda gata kan man uppleva hopplös fattigdom och extrem rikedom.
