This is a collection of short stories by Swedish journalist Staffan Heimerson. He is a big jolly guy, like a Swedish version of Bill Bryson. Many of the episodes are downright hilarious, such as the hunt for Bin Ladin in Falun and his road trip on the Karakoram Highway which connects China and Pakistan. He also describes being taken prisoner in Zimbabwe, where they put classified documents in the outdoor toilet to avoid suspicion.
The dark days of Sarajevo
"The city survived on the edge of annihilation and has started to recover, but the stone walls still seem to cry out in lament of all the horrible things they have seen."
Historic locations in Gothenburg
"Hundreds of houses were quickly build, but unfortunately all of it was burned to the ground in 1611 by Danish forces."
Wazzup in Vaduz
"Vaduz Castle is overlooking the town from a hill, a short walk from the center. It’s really a postcard view with the alps in the background, which I’m sure the prince enjoys as he sips his morning coffee while towering above his loyal subjects."
The fairytale castles of Sintra
"The Portuguese town of Sintra is famous for many beautiful castles. Palácio Nacional da Pena is arguably the most stunning of the lot. "
Aliens in Nevada and New Mexico
"We turned around and went down another dirt road, past countless Joshua trees until our car was covered in dirt and we finally arrived at the Front Gate of Area 51."
Visions of Singapore
"By extensive use of landfill with sand bought from Indonesia and Cambodia, the bay area has expanded greatly in the last few years and tall buildings pop up everywhere."
