Brazil - Through jungle and concrete

Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Iguazu, Paraty, Ubatuba, Campos do Jordao, Sao Jose dos Campos, Itaipu.

  • City of God

This is Rio de Janeiro, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The name means River of January in Portuguese, since the explorers led by Vespucci in January 1501 thought the bay of Guanabara was a river. To the right is the well-known Copacabana beach, where it is almost impossible to avoid humming on The girl from Ipanema.

  • Reach out and touch faith

The statue of Christ the Redeemer is positioned at the top of Corcovado mountain, overlooking the entire city. The statue is lit by night, visible from almost everywhere as a tiny star of light in the darkness.

  • Bring forth the Walther PPK

The top of the Sugarloaf mountain is reached by cable car only. Movie buffs remember it from the Bond film Moonraker, where Roger Moore somewhat awkwardly battled a dentally challenged Richard Kiel.

    Reach out and touch faith.

  • City of God

This shot was taken at twilight from the opposite hill Pão de Açúcar, the Sugarloaf mountain. This top is reached by cable car and I sat there for several hours waiting for the perfect moment while watching the city lights turn lit one by one. The statue of Christ the Redeemer is positioned at the top of Corcovado mountain, overlooking the entire city.

  • Behind the wheel

Taking O bondinho, the old tram through the bohemian hills of Santa Teresa is a refreshing experience. Unless the locals decide to hunt you for sport. Notice the armed guards in the back.

  • Urban sprawl

Sao Paulo has a population of approximately 10 million (17 million if including suburban area), which makes it the largest city in the southern hemisphere and second largest in the world. After walking down there for a whole day, I didn't question that remark.

The enormous city limits are impressive at sunset.

  • No swimming

If you had an idea of go swimming 50 feet from the waterfalls in this fast river, don't. If you do, you're obviously headless, as the sign says.

  • Somewhere under the rainbow

There are over 275 water falls at this awesome site. A multitude of birds fly through rainbows as in a fairy tale, accompanied by the mighty roars of the cataratas. I went in a small speedboat down there, passing under some of the minor falls. The water was really cold and I got totally soaked, but it was an awesome experience!

Apart from the nearby voodoo signs, this waterfall area was very nice.
