The dark days of Sarajevo

As I stand here in the center of Sarajevo, it is hard to imagine the terrible things that this capital has seen. One of the most well-known tragedies is the assassination of Archduke Frans Ferdinand in 1914, which was the starting point of the first World War. I walked across the Latin Bridge and stood on the spot where Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip fired the gunshot at the car, almost exactly 100 years ago (off by only two months).

Welcome to King’s Landing

I’m back in Croatia and I’m currently staying in beautiful Dubrovnik. But to fans of the series Game of Thrones, the city is better known as King’s Landing, capital of the Seven Kingdoms. During the first season, many of the exterior scenes were shot in Mdina, former capital of Malta. But due to various complications the filming later moved to Dubrovnik.

The cobblestones of Maidan Nezalezhnosti

Almost one year ago, I walked across the wet cobblestones of Maidan Nezalezhnosti, the central square of Kiev. The Independence Square is a traditional place for political protests, including the infamous Orange Revolution in 2004. The square has even seen the assault of the Mongol army in 1240, as the Lyadski Gates located at the site were destroyed.
